Lactase enzyme pills are produced by many companies and come in many varieties. However, they are ALL the same thing--lactase enzymes. It is up to you to try different types to find which works best for you. You will find them in grocery stores, health food stores, online, etc. As I mentioned in another post, Lactaid makes excellent ice cream (and yes, it's real ice cream.) However, I discovered an ice cream "substitute" called Soy Delicious that is AWESOME in a health food store. It is actually much healthier for you than regular ice cream, and even has fiber! Tastes like super premium ice cream without the super premium price. You might consider trying soy milk and other soy-based products, as this is a common substitute for milk, and many are quite tasty. There are also recipes available from many sources to help with a lactose intolerant diet. These can be found on the internet, in your library, or your favorite bookstore.
Many who are lactose intolerant are not severely so, as I am. Those folks may not have to be concerned about eating foods that contain small amounts of lactose, only about eating too much of those foods. Everyones intolerance varies. For instance, if I ingest even a single teaspoon of milk, well, the Hindenberg comes to mind. Lactose -free milk, by the way is actually real milk with the lactase enzyme added to it to break down the lactose. The ONLY difference in taste is that lactose-reduced milk is slightly sweeter, as the lactose is broken down into simpler, more apparent-to-the-taste sugars.Lactose-reduced milk is actually excellent for cereal & cooking, and believe it or not, lactose-reduced milk is easier to digest & therefore better for you.
APOLOGIES!!! As far as I am aware, the INGREDIENTS to avoid are lactose itself, whey, milk- non-fat, low-fat, or any type of COW'S milk for that matter. I mention cow's milk because milk derived from any other animal is not a problem. So EAT THAT GOAT CHEESE! In fact many common cheeses, such as Cheddar, Swiss, Muenster, Monterey Jack, Parmesian & Mozzerella (Again, THANK GOD!!) contain no lactose, because the cultures used to produce the cheese destroy the lactose. Further in fact, Kraft products will TELL YOU if that product contains no lactose, if you will look just beneath the nutrition info label. YAY, KRAFT !!!! more............
Above all, DO NOT WORRY!!!, your life is not over! You will get used to this. Please believe it. There is actually good (or at least decent) news where this monster is concerned. Firstly, there are many products readily available to help you with this issue. E.G., Lactaid , DairyEase , etc. Some stores produce there own products, such as Giant Food , WaWa , etc. INVESTIGATE, as store brand products tend to be less expensive, and I have found to be just as good. Lactaid makes pills, drops, lactose-reduced milk, and excellent ice cream. There are many brands of bread that do not contain milk or lactose-containing ingredients. more...............
Now, there are things that obviously do not contain lactose. Such as steak (Thank God) vegetables, etc. BUT! if you are not SURE about it, READ THE INGREDIENTS! DON'T BE EMBARRASSED!!!! Understand THIS, it is better to suffer a small bit of embarrassment than to suffer the symptoms of lactose intolerance, as I am sure you will agree! If your friends give you flack about it, TELL THEM WHERE TO GO!!! You MUST refuse to succumb to the embarrassment or YOU WILL suffer more for it! FACT!!! more...............
Hello & thank you for visiting . Here I hope you will find & share information about dealing with lactose intolerance. My own story began in 1993 , at which time I was diagnosed as being lactose intolerant. My doctor handed me a list of foods to avoid , wished me luck and charged me $125 for all 10 minutes of my visit. That was it. Good Luck. Well here YOUR luck has changed for the better, in spite of it all, as I obviously have alot of experience with this more common than thought problem. I will try to be as concise & brief as possible with my advice. First of all, if you have a list of foods to avoid, THROW IT OUT!!! The thing to do is read the ingredient list on EVERYTHING you wish to purchase. E.G. some breads contain milk products, some don't. Some brands of Hot Dogs contain the thing itself (lactose, that is.) more...................
